/establishing routines
/what is a ‘routine’?
After a quick search on the web I ended up with one thing that almost every definition has in common: doing something on a regular and always in a similar or same way.
And I do think this is a broad but still pretty accurate way of defining a routine.
/my routines
For me it has always been a little bit harder because of me working nightshifts in between uni - so every week and every day was somewhat new. Thinking about fixing the sleeping schedule, when to wake up etc.
But in the latest weeks I decided to switch jobs - get something with a regular timeslot in the day. And ever since my routines have been making my life quite a lot easier.
/how did I build my routines
To be honest the routine I probably like the most besides the regular bed and waking up times is my morning routine.
I didn’t originally come up with one that is somewhat ‘optimized’ or follows any guide from which you may find dozens online. It just came a little bit more natural. I didn’t even notice I had a routine until after it was already established deeply.
But as i was quite stressed with studying because of my upcoming exams and one thing I always made sure was to take my time in the morning and start nicely into the day. I woke up, made myself ready in the bathroom and then proceeded to drink a coffee, make me a small breakfast of 2 fried eggs and ate that while watching the news of the day before.
/why I feel like routines are a good thing
And this is how I started my day with the same structure. After that I knew it was time to start being productive and even though I took my time with breakfast and everything around it. I did get going immediately afterwards.
I felt like it was helping me quite a lot with procrastinating, having a structured start into every day while not needing to think about the next steps gave me some kind of mental wellbeing I did not expect from it.
It might sound a bit corny but having this did help me a lot - having a routine made myself focus more on the task ahead rather than having to plan my day as an additional task.
This is what ultimately led me to the perception that routines just make you think about what you do a little less, which leads to having more time and energy on the real tasks ahead.
/future routines
After my exams are all done as of yesterday I am for sure not changing the morning routine up. I will take the ‘holidays’ just as time for things that I want to come after - tinkering with an arduino, smaller side projects and in general becoming more competent in what I do.
I am not quite sure what routines I want to establish but I sure do know that having them kind of lay out the structure of my days will help me get into ‘focus mode’ better and make me a more productive person.
/looking forward
I do think I am always trying to get a little bit better just in general as I was yesterday - I firmly believe that routines will take their part with this and will support me in this regard in the future.
I am curious on what the next few months will hold for me but I looking forward to find out and growing during the process!
On this regard - stay curious, go and explore and always try to be atleast 1% better than you were yesterday.
